Maroubra is 10km east of the CBD and is a haven for locals to surf, swim and relax. Maroubra Beach is a wide, expansive beach that stretches across the bay for about 1km. More rugged than its eastern neighbours, the beach is undeniably beautiful and there’s a lot more room to breathe here but beware, it is known for its territorial surfers! Mahon Pool is located north of the beach and is a cut into natural rock with a stunning setting that’s also popular to local swimmers.

Maroubra is at the end of the famed coastal walk from Bondi. It also has a number of large reserves and playgrounds for families to choose from. One of the most popular is the Arthur Byne Reserve on the beachfront with a newly revitalised children’s playground, BBQ area, a large skate park and adjoining Maroubra Life Saving Club. Heffron Park on Fitzgerald Avenue is a huge expanse of parkland that incorporates the Des Renford Aquatic Centre with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis and netball courts, sports fields, parklands and a 2km cycle track.

With its rapid development in the 1920s, solid brick homes and California bungalows were the most common housing styles in the area. In the 1960s and 1970s home units took over and that continued with many high-rise developments in the Maroubra Junction vicinity from the 1990s.

For shopping, the Maroubra Junction shopping hub on Anzac Parade was recently revamped and features a thriving retail/commercial centre with supermarkets, speciality stores and a variety of eateries to choose from. Prices in Maroubra are on the rise, but its still an affordable option when you compare to other surrounding beachside suburbs such as Coogee, Clovelly and Bronte.
