The Matthew Jones Foundation Annual Art Awards Tuesday, June 14th

The Matthew Jones Foundation is excited to announce its 8th Annual Art Awards competition to raise much needed funds for children with special needs and special needs education, will be held on Tuesday, 14th June at Mount Ashby Estate, Moss Vale.

Founded in 2009 by Di and Bill Jones of Di Jones Real Estate, in honour of their son Matthew who was diagnosed at 9 months old with severe physical and mental disabilities and later died at the tender age of 34, The Matthew Jones Foundation raises much needed funds to support families who face a similar challenge with a special needs child. Since its inception, the Foundation, supported through Di Jones Real Estate, has distributed donations to special needs schools whose combined goal is to make a difference to the lives of special needs students by ensuring they have a quality of life as enriching and varied as Matthew did.

The Matthew Jones Award is an annual art competition and exhibition, which celebrates the creative spirit of children. Primary school children from the Bowral Community of Schools and beyond, have been invited to enter this competition with the hope of raising much needed funds for the Bowral Community of Schools including Tangara Special Needs School.

The event is being generously hosted by the ever stylish Sally Beresford (of Beresford Antiques Woollahra fame) and her partner Chris Harvey. Mount Ashby Estate, with it’s award winning wines, Holstein dairy cattle, antiques and buildings combining a blend of French provincial and early Australian architecture, is the perfect setting to showcase the children’s artworks. All works on display are offered for sale at a nominal price in addition to a raffle containing some fabulous prizes for both students and schools donated by many generous local businesses, to support the fundraising efforts of the Foundation.

We are thrilled to have as Guest Judge Danie Mellor, a Southern Highlands resident who is an artist with a national and international reputation. His work is represented in collections in Australia and overseas, including The National Gallery of Australia, Museum of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Canada, National Museums Scotland, National Gallery of Victoria, and the Kerry Stokes Collection. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Canberra Critic's Choice Award in 2006, the John Tallis Acquisitive Award in 2008, the Victorian Indigenous Ceramic Art Award in 2009, and the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing in 2010. In 2009, Mellor won the 26th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award which is now part of the National Gallery of Australia’s permanent collection. Another well-known arts identity is our MC for the evening - Jane Cush - herself a practising sculptor is curator and Director of the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and a tireless voice for the value of art in everyone’s lives.

Whether aged 5 or 85, able bodied or disabled, art, its execution and its appreciation is something that can be enjoyed by all. The Matthew Jones Award asks local primary school children to let their imaginations take flight and for us all to enjoy the ride.
